458 evo web Ferrari testing 458 Challenge Evoluzione at Mugello

458 Italia into the basis for Maranello’s one-make spec racing series. It replaced the F430 Challenge in 2011, which in turn followed the 360 Challenge, F355 Challenge and 348 Challenge that started it all in the mid-90s.

Now the Prancing Horse marque is set to move the game forward again with the revised 458 Challenge Evoluzione. Seen here undergoing testing at what could be any tree-lined circuit but is likely Mugello (which Ferrari just happens to own in addition to the Fiorano test track at the factory), the 458 Challenge Evoluzione takes a step further with a new aerodynamics package.

Other changes will likely be nominal, and Ferrari will probably offer existing customer racers the option of upgrading to stay at the front of the pack instead of replacing their $300k racers entirely. One way or another, Ferrari is set to unveil the 458 Challenge Evoluzione, also at Mugello, after the conclusion this year’s Finali Mondiali, the event that ties up the end of Comments

Evo CotY 2013 Get lost in Evos sublime 2013 Car of the Year testing

Every year Evo stages its Car of the Year test, bringing the best performance cars in the world to one location for an epic shootout. This year the magazine pitted eight CotY finalists against each other on Route Napoleon in Southern France – Evo claims it’s the “best road in the world” – and then proceeded to nitpick the smallest of faults on each car until the winner could be named. You see, this year’s lineup of machines was just so good that only one car obviously wasn’t CotY material from the get-go. Can you guess which one judging from the list below?

– Aston Martin V12 Vantage S
– Audi R8 V10 Plus
– Mercedes-Benz SLS Black Series
– Porsche 911 GT3
– Alfa Romeo 4C

bloomberg dino Totaled Ferrari Dino sculpture sold for $250k

How much would you pay for a Dino? Although this sub-brand was supposed to offer lower-cost alternatives to more expensive Ferraris, a 246 GTS model with “chairs and flares” can fetch big bucks. The later, more angular 308 GT4 is less desirable, but the one above just sold for $250,000. Oh, and it’s a complete wreck – an absolute write-off, as you can see. So how did it fetch a quarter million when it wouldn’t be worth that much in pristine condition? Because this is art.

75eff8d287abu01.jpg Race Recap: At the Abu Dhabi grand prix, the caravan chases a mirage

Both championships have been claimed this year, with Formula One, so the last three races of the schedule are going on as scheduled.

Abu Dhabi was the latest venue, and what the Yas Marina Circuit has lacked in racing excitement, it has more than made up for in drama. It’s where Mark Webber again out-qualified his Red Bull teammate and grabbed pole, just three rounds away from retirement.

He was followed by Vettel, the McLaren, Daniel Ricciardo in the Toro Rosso and Alonso in the second Ferrari in tenth. Tenth.

If the field hadn’t been told that mirages also appear at night, they learned as soon as the lights went out.

Screen Shot 2013 10 28 at 12.04.52 PM How not to unload the 1 of 1 Ferrari P4/5 Competizione from a trailer

Believe it or not, unloading a car from a transport vehicle is a delicate science. It’s alarmingly easy to damage a car in the tight, elevated confines of a dedicated car hauler, but as these gentlemen at the Monterey car week found out, even getting a car off a flatbed comes with its own unique set of challenges.

When the car you’re moving off said flatbed is the only James Glickenhaus, we imagine the stress level is even greater. Yes, this is an unloading gone wrong, although it could have always been worse. The movers have the right idea, working boards underneath the car, but simply didn’t account for the car moving them. The result is a racecar, resting ever so gracefully, on its carbon-fiber nose. Getting the car out of such a precarious position safely requires nearly as much skill as getting it off in the first place.

f5775f25b8ingp01.jpg Race Recap: 2013 Indian Grand Prix mostly calm with chances of Championships

The smog around the Buddh International Circuit got so bad over the weekend that the FIA had to change the practice sessions. Then the soft tires that Pirelli brought to be the options were found to degrade so quickly that teams had to change their qualifying and race strategies. The only man it didn’t seem to affect was – guess who? – Infiniti Red Bull Racing on pole position.

Behind him came Jenson Button. The tire strategizing didn’t work out for Romain Grosjean in the second Lotus, who didn’t get out of Q1 after only running the medium compound tire and lined up 17th.

The Indian Grand Prix has been held twice and Vettel has led every single lap of both races. If nothing else, we knew there would be at least one new thing about this Indian Grand Prix: there’d be a lap not led by Vettel since he qualified on softs and would have to pit before Webber and Alonso who were both on mediums.

We’d have to wait a little longer to find out if a driver other than Vettel would be leading at the end of the race.

f17ccfe2aa3%20PM.png Drive goes sideways, shreds tires in a Ferrari F12 Berlinetta

Chris Harris wasn’t going to turn down the opportunity to hoon a 740-horsepower prancing horse around the scenic Anglesey Circuit in Wales.

In fact, not only was Ferrari nice enough to loan Harris the F12, but it threw in an extra four sets of tires, just for him to destroy while taking moving pictures. The resulting video is indeed one to watch, not just because of the ample amounts of slow-motion drifting, but because Harris, as always, does a great job of making the viewer feel like they’re actually along for the ride.
